Tabbing Speed Estimates:
Tabbing materials are called “tabs” or “wafer seals”. Types of material include paper, translucent which is semi-transparent film, and clear which is a truly clear film. All tab materials are available in “perfed” versions, which mean that there is a perforated line through the tab, which aids the individual who is opening the mail piece.
Tabbing Applications The most common use of tabbing is to apply one or two tabs to keep an open-sided mail piece together so that it can be automatically machine processed by the Post Office. By tabbing the mail piece the Post Office will provide postage discounts, providing that other conditions are met too. Imagine what would happen if open-sided mail pieces were processed at high-speed through Post Office sorting and bar-coding equipment.
Other uses and applications include closing pharmaceutical product descriptions, closing other multi-folded product descriptions, and closing directions for assembling furniture and other products. Another application is closing packets of materials such as several folded product brochures with a folded letter for example. Tab Sizes Tabs are generally 1 inch in diameter but they can be somewhat smaller and larger. Tabs can come in various shapes, including circles, squares, and rectangles. The adhesives used today are vastly superior to adhesives available a few years ago. Quality tabs of one inch in diameter can hold up to 3/8th inch thickness of tabbed materials. Paper tabs are also available in colors and foil styles like gold or silver. The best cost/value is in standard tabs that are manufactured in the hundreds of millions assuring the best price by the volume manufactured. How do tabbing machines work? The tabbing machine needs to “see” the beginning edge of a tab whether the tab is clear, translucent, or paper. A paper edge can be seen or registered by the “eye” of the machine. On clear or translucent tabs a black block behind the tab or a black line separating the tabs indicated the beginning of a tab for the machines purpose of peeling and applying the tab at just the right moment so it is applied at the same place for each mail piece consistently. |
